A simple semi flow-through culture technique for the controlled super-intensive production of <i>Artemia</i> juveniles and adults OMA
Dhert, P.; Bombeo, R.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
A simple semi flow-through <i>Artemia</i> culture unit is described for possible integration in marine fish and shellfish hatcheries as a source of a cheap nursery diet. The system does not require the use of feeding pumps and involves minimal care. Food preparation and addition to the feeding tank is reduced to one or two manipulations per day during the meta-nauplius stages (day 1-3) and the juvenile stages (day 4-14), respectively. Biomass productions are superior to those reported to those for stagnant culture systems and are comparable to those demonstrated for flow-through culture units. This simple rearing technique offers the possibility of producing brine shrimp populations with a uniform size. Furthermore, by varying the feeding...

A simple test for quality evaluation of cultured fry of marine fish OMA
Dhert, P.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
A stress test is proposed for the evaluation of the physiological condition of fish larvae in nutritional studies. The test was used in a study of quantitative (n-3) highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) requirements in larval <i>Lates calcarifer</i> and <i>Siganus guttatus</i>. It enabled to suggest fast intervention at reduced larval quality and allowed to prevent mass mortalities. The stress test offered valuable information for the quantification study of fatty acid requirements in marine fish larvae. In <i>Lates</i> demands for fatty acids were detected in metamorphosis. In <i>Siganus</i> on the other hand, the sensitivity of the larvae was considerably reduced after short (n-3) HUFA boosting of the...

A simple volumeter for small invertebrates OMA
Persoone, G..
The displacement technique for measuring the volume of plankton catches is well established, and a number of papers have been published describing suitable apparatus for this purpose including those by Frolander (1957), and Yentsch & Hebard (1957). Gnanamuthu (1952) reviews several papers dealing with equipment for measuring the volume of small aquatic animals and discusses his own volumeter. The apparatus here described employs a water column and is, therefore, more convenient to handle than previous designs which used a mercury column. It is inexpensive and simple to construct, and will measure to 0.01 or even 0.005 ccm. We have found it most useful in quickly measuring the volume of polychaetes or oligochaetes, small bivalves, small crustaceans, etc.

A simplified 14C method for grazing measurements on natural planktonic populations OMA
Daro, M.H..
The method used consists of adding highly radioactive material (40 µCi/l NaH14CO3) to sea water with its natural concentrations of zoo- and phytoplankton, incubating this water in the light, separating zoo- from phytoplankton after 1h or at the most 2h and measuring the radioactivity of both. Under such conditions, the concentration of the tracer in phytoplankton can be simplified as a linear function of time, and that of the zooplankton as a parabolic function of time. This simplification leads to an overestimation of grazing of at most 2-3%. Comparisons with the Coulter Counter method are given and discussed.

A standard experimental diet for the study of fatty acid requirements of weaning and first ongrowing stages of European sea bass (<i>Dicentrarchus labrax</i> L.): selection of the basal diet OMA
Coutteau, P.; Van Stappen, G.; Sorgeloos, P..
A standard experimental diet was developed to study lipid nutrition in marine fish larvae during weaning and first ongrowing. Basal diets were prepared by extrusion-cooking, crumbling of the pellets, and sieving to obtain particles in the size ranges 150-300 µm and 300-500 µm. Three protein sources in the extruded basal diet were evaluated: (1) micronized cod protein granulate (COD); (2) a mixture of casein, gelatin, and albumin (CGA); (3) a mixture of cod fish meal, whey protein, soybean protein concentrate, albumin, hemoglobin meal, and wheat gluten (MIX). A variable lipid fraction was added to the extruded nucleus by coating the particles with an emulsion, coconut oil (COCO), or fish oil emulsion (FO), in a fluidized bed granulator. European sea bass...

A state of the art on meiofaunal respiration and production OMA
Moens, T.; Vincx, M..
The aerobic respiration of meiofauna in general and of nematodes in particular is studied by means of manometric (Cartesian or related divers) or electrode-based (polarographic electrodes) techniques. The former allow highly accurate measurements on individual or small batches of nematodes, while the latter, less sensitive technique allows rapid and highly reproducible measurements under a variety of abiotic conditions.Nematode respiration is commonly described in a power relation R = aWb, where b averages 0.75 and a represents a measure of metabolic intensity. Published estimates of total nematode community respiration are scant, but seem to agree on an average value of 61...

A study of pigments in some developmental stages of <i>Aurelia aurita</i> Lam OMA
Van den Branden, C.; Van den Sande, P.; Decleir, W..
Unfed polyps of <i>Aurelia aurita</i> are white. Fed with <i><i>Artemia</i> salina</i> nauplii they turn to pinkish because of the canthaxanthin present in the food. The deep brown-red colour of strobila and ephyra is due to melanin.

A study of the orange-red pigment from the accessory nidamental glands of the cephalopod <i>Sepia officinalis</i> L. OMA
Decleir, W.; Richard, A..
In adult female cuttlefish an orange-red pigment concentrates in the accessory nidamental glands. This pigment is tightly bound to granules which are actively secreted by the glands. The only way to dissolve the pigment is an incubation in 40 % NaOH. Afterwards the pigment becomes readily soluble in most organic solvents. Its solubility, its behaviour in thin layer chromatography and its visible adsorption spectrum prove that the pigment is a carotenoid. It is probably formed by oxidation of a carotene. Since its properties do not correspond entirely with those of the known carotenoids, the new cephalopod pigment was called Sepiaxanthine.

A time-dependent flow model for heavy metals in the Scheldt estuary OMA
De Smedt, F.; Vuksanovic, V.; Van Meerbeeck, S.; Reyns, D..
The main processes that determine the behaviour of heavy metals in the Scheldt estuary are tidal hydrodynamics, sediment transport, and sorption of heavy metals on suspended matter. The water quality model WASP is applied to simulate the spatial distribution of five heavy metals in the estuary, under average hydrodynamic and suspended sediment transport regimes. First, the hydrodynamical part of the model is constructed and the results are verified by comparison with measured water levels and flow velocities. Secondly, a salt transport model is set up in order to evaluate the hydrodynamical dispersive mixing characteristics. Thirdly, a suspended sediment transport model is constructed and finally a transport model for heavy metals. The simulated...

Aberrant individuals of <i>Neomysis integer</i> and other Mysidacea: intersexuality and variable telson morphology OMA
Mees, J.; Fockedey, N.; Dewicke, A.; Janssen, C.R.; Sorbe, J.-C..
Intersexuality in the mysid <i>Neomysis integer</i> is described from samples collected in the Elbe (north Germany), Eems-Dollard (north Netherlands), Westerschelde (south-west Netherlands) and Gironde (south-west France) estuaries. Individuals which had an irregularly shaped or nearly symmetrically rounded telson, rather than a typically truncated one, were also recorded from the four populations studied. A culture experiment with damaged specimens revealed that all types of abnormal telson morphology found in the field can result from regeneration of damaged parts. It is concluded that both intersexuality and aberrant telson morphology are widespread phenomena among estuarine <i>N. integer</i> populations. Both abnormalities seem...

Accumulation of trimethoprim, sulfamethoxazole, and <i>N</i>-acetylsulfamethoxazole in fish and shrimp fed medicated <i>Artemia franciscana</i> OMA
Chair, M.; Nelis, H.J.; Leger, P.; Sorgeloos, P.; De Leenheer, A.P..
In a previous paper (H.J. Nelis, P. Léger, P. Sorgeloos, and A.P. De Leenheer, Antimicrob. Agents Chemother. 35:2486-2489, 1991) it was reported that two selected antibacterial agents, i.e. trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole, can be efficiently bioencapsulated in nauplii of the brine shrimp <i><i>Artemia</i> franciscana</i> for administration to fish. This follow-up study showed that larvae of the sea bass and the turbot as well as postlarvae of the white shrimp accumulate the therapeutic agents in high quantities when fed medicated <i>A. franciscana</i>. To monitor their levels as a function of time, the liquid chromatographic method originally developed for the analysis of <i>A. franciscana</i> was modified...

Active margin processes along the Antarctic Peninsula OMA
Henriet, J.-P.; Meissner, R.; Miller, L.W..
The Antarctic Peninsula has a remarkable record of active margin processes, which include subduction with progressive ridge-trench collisions, margin segmentation by major fracture zones, rifting in a hybrid back-arc and sheared plate margin context, fore-arc development and glacial-marine controlled trench fill processes.Several facets of these margin processes both of internal (crustal dynamic) and external origin (climate-controlled) have been documented by a geophysical survey during the Antarktis VI/2 cruise of R.V. <i>Polarstern</i> (October-December-1987).Reflection seismic profiles have been shot over the rift basin of Bransfield Strait, over an elongated sediment-filled trough interpreted as a fore-arc basin, over accretional and...
